Friendly Island Tongan Festival
Friendly Island Tongan Festival
We will be celebrating the 23rd Annual Friendly Island Festival. This is a great opportunity to teach and preserve culture to our youth and also our community. Last year our numbers in attendance increased tremendously from the previous year. This had a lot to do with youth participation. In the previous years, we had adults or young adults perform and participate in our concerts, sports activities and cultural song and dance. This past year, as shown in the video clipping, our youth has shown a great interest in being involved in our community event by participating through dance, singing and in our sports activities and wanting to become engaged with our community. With this involvement, we have seen a great deal of diversity within our festival growing not only with the Pacific Islanders but also enticing the Hispanics, Indians, Chinese and also Caucasians. Diversity always brings about peace in any event and we have seen how this has impacted our Salt Lake community. This year, because of the outcome and participation of our youth from last year, we have had a great number of our youth inquire about being involved in our festival and bringing some of their ideas to the table which I am sure will help our festival grow even more.
