Fatumu Wharf
Giving Back Humanitarian Project
THE STORY
The Fatumu Wharf is a National Tongan American Society humanitarian project to save lives in the island of Tongatapu, Tonga. During health emergencies and urgent needs, a rip current on Fatumu's Laulea Beach is frequently used, though dangerous, for boarding and unloading passengers sailing to and from ‘Eua and Tongatapu. 'Eua is closest to the main island of Tongatapu which often has needed resources and services.
Using the depth of Laulea's rip current for docking is a practice that is very dangerous (worse during winter) and has claimed 13 lives. The absolute need for the Fatumu Wharf is acknowledged by the Tongan government, but has no funds for the project. With your kind donation, the Fatumu Wharf, when completed, will have 7 safe docks for use. In addition, it will provide less travel time (30-40 mins vs. 3 hrs to nearest wharf) for the population of ‘Eua and Tongatapu. A completed wharf will also provide economic, social, and other opportunities to the wharf's surrounding areas in both 'Eua and Tongatapu.
Required environmental assessment for the Fatumu Wharf humanitarian project was completed and have received the Tongan government's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval.
The National Tongan American Society, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, is working hand in hand on this project with a Board of Directors consisting of leaders and citizens from Fatumu village, the island of 'Eua and representatives from Tonga government agencies. Upon completion, the wharf will be a non-profit wharf under the direction of the board of directors. For more info please contact us at info@ntasutah.org. All donations to the project are tax deductible.
